When making a movie, in this case for a yearbook DVD, how can I add music while still staying legal?

Use music you own the copyright to, music that has a public domain copyright, or music that the copyright owner has given you permission to use.

If you have to ask ';Do I own the copyright to this music?'; the answer is probably ';no.'; Many artists have made extended a non-commercial-use license to their music - your Yearbook may qualify under this license, though you should probably clear it with the copyright holder before you act as though this is the case.

Here is a warehouse of live music available for non-commercial purposes. There is plenty to listen to, though most of the acts listed are unsigned club bands.
